Happy Tuesday to all my JWT peeps out there. I wanted to try this. Maybe it will be wildly popular, in which case I'll try this again, or maybe it will flop horribly, in which case I'll delete this and forget it ever happened.

Every week I get a lot of feedback... emails, text messages, Facebook Inbox, messages directly from the site, etc... Sometimes it's totally random, other times it's something in regards to one of our podcasts or an article that just came out.

So today I'm going to post some of those questions and comments. I'll keep the comments anonymous, because none of these people asked to have their business put out there.

Again, these are real questions and comments from real JWT members. Here goes nothing...

Coach, Interesting discussions tonight. I'm not a big fan of the "NBA move of the week" either. Like yourself, I'm a big believer in mastering skills one at a time.

This comment was in regard to our discussion on the JWT Live Show Sunday night, when we were talking about the "move of the week" mentality with Drew Hanlen and Pure Sweat basketball training.

Like I said on the show, Drew has done a phenomenal job creating a buzz and excitement around how basketball players mimic each other. I just hope that high school kids (and younger) are working on the basic skills - most importantly shooting - and they stick to trying to really master 1-2 "moves" instead of trying to pick up a new move every week.

In terms of pure "teaching" those moves, nobody is better than Drew Hanlen. I would just encourage kids to not try to learn every single move they see. Find something you're good at, and like I said, most importantly, shoot shoot shoot and then shoot some more. Really good shooters are hard to find.

I read your article about "The Charter School Lie" and couldn't disagree with you more. My child attends a charter school and has really seen a lot of improvement because of it. Not every Charter School is what you described in your article.

I appreciate your comments. The point that I was making is that not every student can attend a charter school. One, not every student has the means (transportation, etc) to get there, and two, even if they could, there aren't enough seats for every student to go to a charter school. If that were the case, for example, every single child in Beaumont High School could just pick up and go to the same Charter School. Then Beaumont would be empty, and the exact same students would just occupy a different building.

Would being in a new building fix the problems of those students? We know the answer is an obvious NO. Would firing 100% of the teachers and administrators fix the problem? I would argue that it would not, but even if that were true, couldn't we get rid of all faculty/staff without spending millions of dollars on a new building that would house the new Charter School?

The point is, we're just "kicking the can" down the road on our problems in education. Charter Schools aren't going to fix the problems in the communities where struggling schools are located. So instead of focusing our dollars and time and resources on building new schools, I would like to see us focus those dollars and resources on helping poor communities.

I'm glad your child is doing well in his/her new school. There are some examples of really good charter schools out there. I do think Charter Schools can be an important piece of the overall puzzle of what education should look like in Missouri. I just don't think they're a "cure all." Thank you again for your comments.

Coach I liked your podcast about Larry Mosley. It made me think of my elementary coach. Those people don't often get enough credit. I really liked the podcast. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the kind words. Larry had a profound impact on my life. I loved that man and I still miss him all the time. And you're right, those behind the scenes people don't get enough credit. I would tell everybody reading this, if you know somebody else who deserves the same kind of spotlight that I gave to Larry, please pass that story along to me. I'd be glad to share any positive story with our audience.

Coach do you really think they'll split the state tournament? I heard the podcast and I think if they do that they should do it for all sports not just basketball.

I was talking with my brother Toby this morning, and I actually said the same thing. You make a great point. I can't see MSHSAA (or the member schools) making such a big change for only one sport. I think Shannon Crain, who wrote the petition, has a pretty good idea. I can understand both sides of the debate, and it would be hard for me to make such a big change to the state tournament. To your point, I don't think it will happen for basketball only. If it happens, it will happen across all sports.

Who do you think will win the NBA MVP this year?

Wow. Tough question. I said Harden on our preseason show. I'm leaning towards the Greek Freak as well as he's been playing. But I think Porzingis is playing great also (if he'd rebound, the award would be his in a runaway). Keep an eye on Anthony Davis. He's a guy, to me, if he gets hot, watch out. So it could got a lot of different ways.

If I had to pick one, Greek Freak.

You and your brother talk a lot of smack. Who was really better? Be honest.

Toby was a better shooter. I was a better overall player. But if you asked him, he'd probably disagree LOL. Seriously though, Toby could really, really, reeeeeally shoot the ball. He had a quick release and really deep range behind the three point line.

You had an article last year about weight loss and drinking a detox drink. Can you send me that? And how is that going for you? I tried it but didn't have the same success.

Here is the link to that article. I did drop 13 pounds really fast, but that was mostly because I was really out of shape when I started. I think this program is a great jump start to any workout, because it does kind of flush your system out. I would say over the long haul, you need a 75/25 approach to your diet/exercise. In other words, pay more attention to your diet, because what you're eating is actually about 75% of your results, maybe more. This detox is a good 2-3 day kickoff to any program you're doing, just my opinion.

I'm a teacher, and I like to check the site just for the quote of the day. I'm having a hard time getting on the same page with my principal right now. Can you give me one quote to maybe give me a different perspective on how to mend that relationship?

"It's amazing what can be accomplished when nobody cares who gets the credit," by Coach John Wooden. I think this quote is relevant because who cares whose idea it is? We're supposed to be doing what is best for kids, right? So if you want what's best for the students in your class (I'm sure you do), and your principal wants what is best for those students also (I'm sure that he/she does), then it doesn't matter who comes up with the best idea. We want the best idea for those kids. I would approach your relationship with your principal in that manner, that 'if we both want the same thing, there's nothing to argue about." It doesn't matter who gets the credit. Let's just do the best thing for these kids.

I appreciate all of the feedback and support that this site gets. If I can ever do anything for your or answer any questions you might have, you can email me at coach.david.heeb@gmail.com.
