The Three Undeniable Laws of Success

RATED - E for Everyone.

I was reading a really good article the other day, and it listed these three keys to success:

1. Show Up Daily

2. Hard Work Is Non-Negotiable

3. Momentum Trumps Motivation

Here is my take...

Showing up daily is a must. That is the minimum requirement for being successful. How can you be good if you don't show up? When I was coaching basketball, my #1 indicator of whether or not a guy was going to be good was ATTENDANCE. If he never missed practice, and if he was always in the gym during the summer, at least he had a chance to be good. When I became a principal, the thing I stressed most was ATTENDANCE. It doesn't matter how smart you are, or how good (or bad) your teachers are, if you aren't at school. Same thing for those teachers, it doesn't matter how great you are if you aren't here. ATTENDANCE is the basic requirement for being good at anything. YOUR BEST ABILITY IS YOUR AVAILABILITY.

Hard work doesn't guarantee success, but like ATTENDANCE and showing up in the first place, hard work does at least make success possible. I'm sure there are things you can be lazy and still be good at, but I can't think of any right off the top of my head. You might work hard and NOT be successful. That's possible. Maybe you had bad luck or some other unforeseeable event knock you off your course. It happens. Working hard at least gives you a chance to be successful.

Finally, I totally agree about momentum being more important than motivation. That's because motivation is a feeling. Like right now, maybe you're getting motivated reading this. GOOD! I hope so. But that feeling will fade if you don't keep moving forward. Momentum, on the other hand, is hard to walk away from. It's hard to slow down or stop. If you've ever been on a serious, serious workout routine that lasted several weeks, it's hard to stop. Now imagine you just got fired up and went to the gym on a New Year's Resolution or something. That would be a lot easier to stop than that same guy who hadn't missed a day at the gym in 9 weeks. MOMENTUM is hard to stop. The more consistent you can be with your work ethic will build momentum for you.

So think about that as you go throughout your day. Show up, work hard, and keep doing that until you build up some momentum. It's going to make you better at whatever you're trying to do. Have a great day. Make it a win! #JWT
