I can't wait to get to the games in Columbia later this week. I'm a little sad that my SCC Braves and Bravettes won't be there. I'll still get to see a lot of people I know from Oran and Advance and other old friends at the state tournament, like the good people at MSHSAA.
Our girls (Prairie Home) will play Walnut Grove, who has been there like 25 times in a row. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but they're always good. Walnut Grove is also bringing the boys' team to the Final Four, and they are coached by my good buddy, Darrin Meinders. We've known each other for years, we text back and forth all the time, and we're even Snapchat buddies. We've talked back and forth throughout the season. It was just here recently that we realized our schools might end up playing. So that will be fun to get to see him.
Then there is Joe Shoemaker, the boys coach of the Oran Eagles. Joe and I grew up about 5 minutes apart, went to college together, and coached against each other for years. He's a fantastic coach. Oran's girls are also making the trip. Their assistant coach is a guy named Dustin Cauble, who back in the day was a heckuva good power forward from Scott City High School. Dustin and I played so many games against each other I can't even count them all. His daughter is one of the best players in the state, and she's only a sophomore! I can't wait to see her play.
Then there is Advance, coached by Bubba Wheatley, an awesome guy and a great coach. He's got them back in the Final Four again. They've got a kid on the team whose last name is Below (pronounced BE-LUE, not BE-LOW haha). His older brother plays for Ole Miss now and is a texting buddy of mine. Their dad, Luke Below, was an all state guard from Scott County Central. Luke was a senior when I was a sophomore, and I know him and his wife Kacy very well. So I can't to see them and all my Advance friends this weekend.
Hey, I've made a lot of friends from Glasgow. Seriously. Their student section stayed and cheered with our kids on Saturday. They were awesome. Their fans cheered for us, too. So while I can't root against my buddy Darrin (Walnut Grove), who plays against Glasgow, I hope their kids do well this weekend.
South Iron's girls will be there, too. I don't know that their girls have ever made this trip, but their boys have. Dusty Dinkins is the boys coach there and is awesome. Dusty and I coached against each other for several years, and I took my teams at Scott Central to his team camp. So I got to know some folks from South Iron doing that. It will be great to see all of them.
It's going to be a lot of fun. What I'm asking everybody to do - everybody from every school reading this - go to the website, log in using an email or Facebook (click-click-boom you're done). Then you can post a score, an update, put a picture up on the site, etc. It's so easy and simple to do. I'm going to be doing it all weekend, but I think it would be so awesome if everybody else jumped in and represented their school.
I can't wait. It's going to be such a fun weekend of basketball. Some teams are going to win, and some are going to lose. Either way, it's going to be a memory for all of the fans and parents and players and coaches that they'll never forget. So help me put all of this up on the site. It will be fun. Send me your team pics from the restaurant, from the hotel, from the bus. Post score updates. Give me a pic of the JumboTron, etc. Everybody join in. Spread the word. This is going to be awesome.
See you all in Columbia. #JWT #JoinTheRevolution
